A small story.
A wide world.

Find a place. Give someone a reason.
See what happens next.

Begin a story

Begin with
a place.

A cabin beyond the lake. A tree with one bright window. Somewhere that holds a question.

Choose one detail you can see. That is enough for a beginning.

The original imagined night forest
One light on the far shore.

Give someone
a reason.

The keeper

Wants to keep the last light burning, but has run out of matches.

The moth

Wants to find the moon, but mistakes a window for the sky.

The visitor

Has something to return, and is not sure the door will open.

Let one
thing change.

One evening,
the light went out.

The story starts where the familiar stops.

A window in the pines.

The keeper counted three matches. One for the stove, one for the lamp, and one for a visitor who had never come.

Across the lake, a moth saw the little window go dark. It folded its wings. Without the light, the cabin looked exactly like every other piece of night.

Then someone knocked. The keeper opened the door to find a jar full of fireflies and a note: “You left this on for me.”

She put the last match back in the box.

Your first
paragraph.

A place, a person and one change. Write the version only you would write.

Read it once,
slowly.

Listen for the line that feels crowded. Give it room.

Find one word you do not need. Let it go.

Keep the detail that makes the place feel real.

Keep the page.
